The Center

The Jean Monnet Center of Excellence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (JMCE) is a hub on the UNC campus, prepared to provide a campus-wide, state-wide and transatlantic community, with leading research and teaching as well as events and knowledge platforms on European Union Studies. ‘The EU: its People, Policies, and Politics’ is the JMCE’s overarching theme: bringing current and pertinent issues facing the EU today, such as immigration, social policy, and EU integration to campus. The JMCE reaches target groups of researchers, undergraduate, masters, and PhD students, civil society actors as well as the wider public – and cements the academic activities relating to EU studies on campus as well as broaden visibility on, interest in, and understanding of the European Union throughout the local community and across the Atlantic.

Grant Activities

CES received the three-year Jean Monnet Center of Excellence grant in the fall of 2015. The goal of the JMCE is to be a hub on the UNC campus, prepared to provide a campus-wide, state-wide and transatlantic community, providing leading research and teaching as well as events and knowledge platforms on European Union studies. The new JMCE reaches target groups of researchers, undergraduate, masters, and PhD students, civil society actors as well as the wider public. The JMCE aims to cement the academic activities relating to EU studies on campus as well as broaden visibility on, interest in, and understanding of the European Union throughout the local community and across the Atlantic – while building lasting partnerships for many years to come.

Our Theme

‘The EU: its People, Policies, and Politics’ is the JMCE’s overarching theme: bringing current and pertinent issues facing the EU today, such as immigration, social policy, and EU integration to campus. We will extend the research program on EU studies through seven conferences over the lifetime of the grant and by sponsoring travel of UNC Faculty to Europeanist conferences and partner institutions. We are further promoting EU studies among students through a new course entitled “EU Today”, which includes teaching by the new JMCE EU visiting fellow, and strengthening the TAM Friday Lecture Series by inviting speakers directly from Europe. The JMCE faculty members come from various disciplines and their conferences will further foster dialogue on EU studies amongst various faculty and students at UNC, neighboring and European universities, and the general public as well as bring greater visibility to the issues at hand.
