Each spring, the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence at the UNC Center for European Studies hosts a young scholar from a research institution located in the EU. During their stay, the visiting scholar teaches a selection of the EU Today course, infusing on-the-ground, practical knowledge of EU studies. They are also fully immersed in JMCE activities including lectures, conferences and networking opportunities with JMCE faculty, staff and students. The visiting scholar gives one public lecture at UNC, and have the opportunity to continue their research with UNC’s resources.

Spring 2018 | Anna Hokema

Anna Hokema

Anna Hokema is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Bremen’s SOCIUM Research Center on Inequality and Social Policy (Department 3: Dynamics of Inequality in Welfare Societies) and the Coordinator of the Double Degree Program ‘European Master in Labour Studies and Social Policy’ (Milan/Bremen). In addition, Dr. Hokema serves as ERASMUS Coordinator and Decentralized Women’s Representative on the Board of Directors of the SOCIUM. Her research interests include gender and aging, post-retirement work, sociology of the welfare state, and qualitative methods in social research.

Spring 2017 | Mariano Torcal

Mariano Torcal

Mariano Torcal received a PhD. from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1995) and a Ph.D. from the Ohio State University (2001). He has served as a Full Professor of Political Science at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra since 2006. Professor Torcal was Chair of the Department and Ph.D. Program coordinator for the Political and Social Sciences Department at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra from 2004-2007. He has served as the Spanish National Coordinator of the European Social Survey since 2001. Prof. Torcal has authored and contributed in several books in the field, and published many articles in national and international specialized journals such as Comparative Political Studies and the British Journal of Political Science.

Spring 2016 | Claudia Matthes

Claudia Matthes

Claudia Mattes has served as the Academic Coordinator of the German Turkish Masters Program in Social Sciences (GeT MA) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 2008. She is also a Research Assistant in Humboldt’s Department of Social Sciences, with research interests including German and comparative politics, political governance; transition and democratic theory; and regional cooperation and EU-enlargement. Dr. Matthes previously held positions in the Administration of the Deutsche Bundestag and the Office of the Vice-President for International and Public Affairs of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She holds a PhD from Freie Universität Berlin.
